Overview

SUMMARY: 

Loads, unloads and transfers cargo from barges, warehouse, equipment, and customer vehicles to facilitate the shipment of freight to, from and within Alaska.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned

  • Able to work flexible hours.
  • Receive, load, unload, and transfer freight shipments to and from a variety of containers, trailers, trucks, and non-commercial vehicles using forklift or by hand within or in the vicinity of CFS warehouse facility, surrounding yard, and/or Alaska Marine Lines barge and barge landing.
  • Works on the deck of barges lashing and unlashing containers and equipment.
  • Operate up to 8,000# capacity forklift to move freight and equipment, to or from equipment, warehouse, and yard locations.
  • Secure shipments (to avoid movement) within or on different types of equipment using a variety of banding, dunnage, lumber, binders or chains.  Ensure proper securement to prevent damage.
  • Count, weigh, and verify condition/piece counts of freight shipments against various documents including, but not limited to, the following: Bills of Lading, loading and unloading manifests, and delivery receipts.
  • Assist in the maintenance of company property, to include sweeping of warehouse floor, equipment, and other service center facility housekeeping duties as required.

Education and/or Experience:

High School Diploma; some work related experience desirable but not required. Experience in the transportation industry is preferred.

 

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as Bills of Lading, Delivery Receipts, military documents, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with customers and co-workers.  Strong communication skills both verbally and in written form.

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to understand detailed written and oral instructions; ability to prioritize and problem solve in time/safety-sensitive situations.

 

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand or walk while moving around the areas of the terminal. The employee is regularly required to use hands, arms and fingers to perform the normal duties of the job such as inspecting equipment or entering computer data.  The employee is regularly required to talk and hear while communicating with telephones, radios and in person.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel or crouch around equipment and facilities. The employee may occasionally be required to move or lift up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus during the normal course of the job. 

 

The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and working around moving machinery.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
