Entry level for learning the basics of service center operations.  Work assigned is planned to provide experience and familiarization with policies, procedures, protocol, terminology and systems pertaining to operations.  Works under close supervision; work is guided by specific and frequent instructions.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may be assigned

Attendance and timeliness are essential functions of this position.



Must be able to work flexible hours.

  • Receive, load, unload, and transfer freight ships to and from a variety of containers, trailers, trucks, and non-commercial vehicles using forklift or by hand within or in the vincinity of CFS warehouse facility, surrounding yard, and/or Alaska Marine Lines barge landing.
  • Operate forklifts with lifting capacity between 3,000# and 8,000# to move freight between equipment, warehouse, and yard locations.
  • Consolidate customer shipments as efficiently as possible by destination port, temperature, size, and other variables as required.
  • Ensure proper positioning and securement of freight according to federal regulations governing the shipment and storage of hazardous materials.
  • Assist in the maintenance of company property, to include sweeping of warehouse floor, equipment, and other service center facility housekeeping duties as required.
  • Secure shipments within or on a variety of equipment through the use of metal banding, dunnage, lumber, binders, and/or chains; ensures proper securement and blocking to prevent cargo damage.
  • Inspect and review shipping/receiving/unloading/loading documents to ensure proper handling and routing of freight shipments.
  • Count, weigh, and verify condition/piece counts of freight shipments against various documents including, but not limited to, the following: Bills of Lading, loading and unloading manifests, and delivery receipts.
  • Assist customers/vendors with directions, proper paperwork, and delivery or pickup instructions

  • Receive, unload, stage, and load freight shipments through the use of computerized data entry system.
  • Inspect, clean, and sweep out equipment as needed prior to reloading with cargo.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local regulations as well as company policy and standards.

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); plus one to two years months of related experience and/or training in general freight operations. Knowledge of current customers, requirements and processes is helpful.


Certificates and Licenses:

Forklift certification for operating fork trucks with lifting capacities between 3,000# and 8,000#. 


Language Skills:

Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with co-workers, supervisors and managers, to understand procedures and warning signs and or markings in the English language, to respond to inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.


Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals and shipping documents;  ability to write routine reports and correspondence;  ability to communicate effectively with other employees and customers.


Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide two digit numbers.


Reasoning Ability:

Ability to understand detailed written and oral instructions; ability to prioritize and problem solve in time/safety-sensitive situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear while communicating with customers and co-workers in person or via telephone or radio. 


Employee must be able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods.  Employee is frequently required to use hands, fingers and arms to steer and operate controls while lifting, transporting, moving or securing freight and is occasionally required to kneel, stoop or crouch to examine equipment and cargo.


The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to manipulate objects, tools, or operate controls; the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pound objects.   Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.



Employee is required to wear PPE as outlined in Company’s Industrial Health and Safety Manual Chapter 2.27 PPE Program, which may include hard hat, safety toe shoes/boots, gloves, safety glasses/goggles, hearing protection, respiratory protection and arctic gear.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.


The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however hearing protection may be required.
