  • Overview

    Bering Marine Corporation provides charter and scheduled service throughout Alaska with their fleet of tugs and barges, landing crafts and hovercraft.  The Deckhand performs various duties aboard the vessel and during cargo loading and unloading.

    Responsibilities

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

    • Performs routine maintenance of vessel, deck and cabin areas to include cleaning, painting and minor repairs.
    • Assists in the navigation of the vessel as instructed and supervised by Captain and Mate.
    • Assists in vessel loading and unloading.
    • May perform galley functions such as cooking, cleaning, etc.
    • Handles tow lines and vessel lines and works with other crew members to safely dock and secure the vessel.
    • Demonstrates, at all times, the safe use of deck machinery.
    • Ensures safety of crew of vessel and upholds the safety policies of the Company.
    • Participates is safety meetings and assists with Job Safety Analysis (JSA’s) and other reporting conditions.
    • Good teamwork is essential to this position.
    • Performs other duties as instructed by Vessel Captain.

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
    Knowledge of vessel operations preferred.  Alaska experience preferred.

     

    LANGUAGE SKILLS:
    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, governmental regulations, and safety regulations. Ability to write reports and accurately record information into vessel records.   Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, crew, customers, and the general public. English speaking preferred.

     

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

     

    REASONING ABILITY:
    Ability to use common sense and sound judgment to deal with situations and multiple problems that occur simultaneously in a highly controlled and regulated environment. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

     

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
    Able Body Seaman preferred.

    STCW Endorsement preferred

    TWIC Card required

    Current CG Physical Card required

    Passport preferred for potential Canadian stops

     

    OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
    Must be available to work days, evenings, weekends, nights or holidays and to be away from home for extended periods of time. Must be able to work in a team environment in close quarters for extended periods of time.  Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to get along well with various types of personalities, backgrounds, etc.

     

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and smell. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

     

    COMMENTS:
    Post-conditional offer of employment drug test is required. Random drug testing is required of all employees.
