  • Overview

    Responsible for the maintenance and repairs of Manitowoc crawler cranes with limited or no supervision in a highly skilled, safe and professional manner. This position is a Safety Sensitive position.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Responsible for the maintenance and repair of complex mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems on company owned equipment while using a high degree of independent judgment.

    • Perform crane inspections, repairs, installations and respond to breakdown calls

    • Review, interpret and understand codes, instructions and specifications of equipment along with special drawings or blueprints.

    • Inspect hoists, cranes, systems, chain falls and pullers.

    • Examine all inspection tests, findings or repairs. Test each crane repair for complete functionality.

    • Complete daily paperwork accurately and completely; time tickets, service reports, and inspection reports.

    • Maintain all company equipment and tools in compliance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and certifications.

    • Maintain work area, equipment and tools in a clean and organized manner, following all safety guidelines.

    • Seasoned mechanic with minimum of 5 years of heavy equipment and crane repair experience.

    • Strong experience with mechanical repair, trouble shooting and servicing of crawler cranes, specifically Manitowoc.

    • Degree in diesel technology preferred.


    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, safety regulations and handbooks. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.



    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and apply those concepts to work related situations.



    Ability to comprehend and learn technical manuals. Ability to communicate both in person and via phone to others on how to troubleshoot equipment based on standard operating procedures and/or technical manuals. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.



    Valid driver’s license and good driving record is required.  Must be eligible to apply and be issued a TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Card) Able to meet forklift certification requirements. Enhanced driver’s license or valid passport for travel required. Crane certified.



    • Ability to weld is essential.

    • Excellent mechanical aptitude.

    • An advanced understanding of schematics and diagrams.

    • Ability and willingness to travel to Alaska and other ports as required.

    • Ability to meet a regular work schedule.

    • Ability and willingness to work overtime as required.

    • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work to meet schedules/deadlines.

    • Regular attendance and timeliness are essential functions of this position. Daily physical presence is required.

    • Ability to work alone or as part of a team with minimal supervision. 

    • PC skills preferred:  Windows, Excel, Outlook, keyboarding


    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Job is very physical and requires the individual to be able to perform duties and work long hours mainly outdoors in a variety of weather.  The employee frequently is required to walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must be flexible and mobile to work in confined areas and able to stoop, crawl and maneuver in small confined spaces.  Long hours of standing or sitting may be required.


    The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and may be required to wear air purifying respirator. Employee is required to wear PPE as outlined in Company’s Industrial Health and Safety Manual which may include hard hat, safety toe shoes/boots, gloves, safety glasses/goggles, hearing protection, respiratory protection and arctic gear. The employee needs the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a  safe manner.



    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and mainly outdoors in a variety of weather.  The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; and vibration. 


    The noise level in the work environment is moderate in the office to very loud in the barge operation.
